Renowned French pastry chef, Pierrick Boyer, has partnered with Melbourne Watch Company to create a limited edition timepiece. The new style is the latest edition to the Melbourne Watch Company collection and is a new style for the brand and is based on an aeronautics theme – reflected through both design and name, the ‘Avalon’.
Although the internationally awarded chef is widely known and respected for his elaborate dessert creations, he is also an avid watch enthusiast and collector. Boyer has long been involved in the watch world and this partnership with Melbourne Watch Company has come together seamlessly and organically for both parties.
The Avalon will feature a Miyota automatic open-heart movement in a 45mm DLC coated case, along with an exquisite multi-layered dial beneath orange-accented hands and markers.
We caught up with Pierrick to talk about his collaboration with the Melbourne Watch Company.
Congratulations on your limited timepiece with the Melbourne Watch Company! You’re more known for your genius in the kitchen with beautiful pastries, chocolate, cakes & desserts, here in Melbourne! How did you get involved with designing a watch?
A fan first tagged me on MWC’s Instagram account & I followed them & really liked what they did. It represented Melbourne, and was very interesting in design. I love design so when we got talking, the conversation headed into talking about co designing a watch! I love creating, it’s what drives me, if it’s for the shop, a special function for a particular theme, a wedding, for me it’s the most interesting part.
In designing the watch, was there anything about coming up with a design that surprised you?
Sure, the mechanical aspect of possibilities, it’s very interesting. It’s definitely more rigid, due to the metal, whereas I work with chocolate, so it can be banded, changed.
How long did the process take?
It took a few months as Sujain (MWC founder and director) had to design it on Photoshop, based on the few meetings & brainstorm ideas we had. We then kept tweaking the designs and prototypes until we were happy with it.
What are the special features of the Avalon that you love?
The open Heart beating, I just love this, as well the more resistant DLC coating, and also the orange motifs.
I think the Avalon is a really well balanced watch and also incredibly unique in design.
