THINGS TO DO IN NYC: MAKING CERAMICS AT CHOPLET CERAMIC STUDIO

Founded by artist Nadeige Choplet in 2006, Choplet Ceramic Studio located in Brooklyn, New York has become a second home to many creatives who have not only learned the skill of pottery and ceramics there, but who visit regularly to practice their craft.

Choplet Ceramic School and Studio offers a variety of class options so whether you are a beginner or looking to upskill, there is something for everyone. You can sign up for an 8 week ceramic class where you can learn wheel throwing, hand building, tile making and sculpting techniques as well as surface decoration and glazing.

The School’s method of teaching is to nurture individual expression. They don’t have a rigid education structure, instead preferring to encourage students to let their instructor know what skills they would like to develop and what vision they have. If you don’t want to sign up for an intensive course, you can try a one time class, or a semi private wheel throwing class. You can also sign up for a private class which will allow you to focus on exactly what you want to learn.

The studio is fitted out with 23 electric wheels, a kick wheel, hand building tables, 2 extruders, 2 slab roller, a glazing spray booth, a drying closet, 5 kilns and a beautiful garden where you can sit outside and enjoy the weather while you create.

As a first timer in the world of ceramics, I signed up for a private class and found it to be a great introduction into the art. I was then able to stay on after the class to work on the techniques I learnt. Ceramics is such a great way to relax and unwind, and it almost becomes like meditation working with the clay. I would highly recommend a visit to the studio if you are looking for a new experience, or are looking for a friendly, inspiring environment to work on your craft.
